If you take a look at what the leading causes of death are in the world, it just comes to cardiometabolic diseases that include diabetes, obesity, cardio & stroke, and cardiovascular problems, mainly hypertension - Ricardo Moguel (Co-Founder Clivi)
Clivi is an AI healthcare platform that provides accessible, comprehensive care to individuals managing chronic conditions, particularly in Latin America.
With a mission to simplify healthcare management, Clivi offers services that help users better handle conditions like diabetes and obesity through convenient digital tools, personalized health plans, and consistent support.
We wanted to bridge the gap between people and quality healthcare by offering a service that feels personal and practical. Clivi brings healthcare to users no matter where they are—on their phones, in their homes, and their communities. - Ricardo Moguel
Clivi's primary focus is making healthcare more manageable and accessible, allowing users to feel in control of their health journey. “Our platform is designed to empower users,” says Ricardo, “giving them resources and support that are normally hard to access or coordinate in traditional healthcare systems.”
Clivi's Journey to PMF
After scaling Doctoralia, an end-to-end healthcare platform for doctors and clinics, in Mexico, Ricardo Moguel wanted to shift his focus to improving healthcare access for end users across the region.
“I was diagnosed with chronic asthma at the age of 6 and didn’t have access to affordable healthcare. After working at a few insurance and healthcare companies, I realized my purpose in life: to dedicate myself to improving the access to healthcare for others.”
This led to the idea for Clivi, co-founded by Ricardo Moguel, Bruno Garza & Kyle Jernigan. Together, they identified a significant healthcare gap in Latin America: chronic conditions like diabetes were becoming increasingly prevalent, yet access to affordable, ongoing care remained out of reach, especially for individuals outside major metropolitan areas.
Further, the penetration of private insurance in Mexico is scarce with less than 10% of the population having private health insurance, leaving many to rely on public services such as Mexican Institute Social Security (IMSS) (The dialogue).
“We saw a need in our communities for something more consistent and more affordable. But we also learned quickly that while people were interested, we weren’t necessarily addressing a market ready to commit financially.”- Ricardo Moguel
After realizing their early target customer was not sustainable, they pivoted to a different demographic. Ricardo told VC Mexico, “Shifting our focus to a more affluent customers was a difficult choice, but it proved to be the right move for Clivi. This audience showed a strong willingness to invest in comprehensive healthcare solutions.”
We realized that to reach the masses, we first needed to build a business that was attractive to our investors, one that could grow rapidly and demonstrate long-term sustainability. This would give us the time advantage we need to continue developing our product. Our dream is to reduce the cost of care for a patient to less than 50 MXN per month relaying in pure AI, while being more effective than any other solution out there. This would enable us to offer practically free healthcare, allowing us to reach the masses and truly drive a fundamental shift in the fight against chronic diseases. - Ricardo Moguel
How does Clivi work?
As Ricardo Moguel explains, “Chronic conditions are something you suffer from every day. You need support every day, assistance every day.”
This insight drives Clivi’s model, where patients receive a personalized treatment plan that includes clinical analyses, consultations with specialists, guidance from psychologists, nutritionists, physical trainers, and even the ability to order medication directly through Clivi.
Traditionally, when a patient is diagnosed with a chronic condition such as diabetes, arthritis, or hypertension (high blood pressure), the standard approach typically includes a combination of medications to manage symptoms and lifestyle modifications to address contributing factors.
Medications are often prescribed to control specific aspects of the condition such as blood sugar levels in diabetes, inflammation in arthritis, or blood pressure in hypertension. At the same time, lifestyle changes, including dietary adjustments, increased physical activity, and stress management, are encouraged to support overall health and disease management.
However, traditional approaches often fall short in providing ongoing, comprehensive care, focusing more on initial diagnosis and treatment than on the continuous, lifelong management of chronic conditions required. This gap leaves many patients struggling to navigate the complexities of their condition, manage symptoms effectively, and prevent complications, often without adequate guidance or tools.
